One night I had a dream.
In my dream I was walking along the beach with the Lord..
Across the sky flashed scenes from my life...For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one belonging to me, and the other to the Lord...
When the last scene of my life flashed before me, I looked back at the footprints in the sand. I noticed that many times along the path of my life there was only one set of footprints. I also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest times in my life.
“You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there have only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”
The Lord replied:
“My Child, the times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand, is when I carried you.”
I found this poem very comforting, but also convicting. It convicted me of how easy and willing I am to question my Savior. Why is it so easy to question God in His goodness? Why is it so easy to assume that He left, when He promised us that He will never leave or forsake us? Could it be because we can't even come close to comprehending the amount of love He has for us? Or maybe it stems from a proud, self-pitying attitude. Maybe it's a little (or a lot) of both?
I pray God will help me to consistently see all the times He carried me. I pray he will help me to count my blessings instead of my mis-fortunes {cuz we all know they aren't mis-fortunes. They are the will of our Father, and we are to give thanks in all things!}.
"When upon life’s billows you are tempest-tossed,
When you are discouraged, thinking all is lost,
Count your many blessings, name them one by one,
And it will surprise you what the Lord hath done.
Are you ever burdened with a load of care?
Does the cross seem heavy you are called to bear?
Count your many blessings, every doubt will fly,
And you will keep singing as the days go by.
So, amid the conflict whether great or small,
Do not be discouraged, God is over all;
Count your many blessings, angels will attend,
Help and comfort give you to your journey’s end.
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!
Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your many blessings, see what God hath done."
